Congrats Nicole Zais and Zach Hichs for taking top honors

The Wheaton College Department of Athletics held its annual awards ceremony last night. To read the complete article, click here.

Senior Nicole Zais picked up the Debi Field Athlete Award as the school's top female athlete. Zach Hicks '07 drew the Claudia Friese Special Recognition Award, which recognizes behind-the-scenes dedication to the athletic program.

A three-time All-American, Zais became the first women's swimmer in program history to garner All-America accolades in an individual event, doing so twice this past winter in the 100- and 200-yard breaststrokes. She placed sixth in the 200 breaststroke, leading the Lyons to a tie for 37th place nationally. Nicole has a program-high-tying 13 all-league finishes, which requires placing in the top two at the conference championship, and she is a part of an astounding nine school records. Way to go NICOLE!!

Zach was a four-year member of the men's swimming & diving team. He returned to Wheaton for a two-year stint as the coordinator for varsity sports and external relations. In addition to his role as a member of the athletic department's senior management staff, Zach served as an assistant to the men's and women's swimming & diving coach. If that wasn't enough, this past year, Zach added director of club sports, intramurals and recreation to his job title, along with coordinator of the Wheaton Athletic Mentors (WAMs), which is the school's student-athlete advisory committee (SAAC). He also helped to create a mentorship program for the United Men of Color (UMC) community called Champ. Way to go ZACH!!

Wheaton College Swimming and Diving met yesterday on campus to celebrate a tremendous season. The first award of the night was MVP, followed by the coaches award, most improved.

Most Valuable Swimmer - Male Freshman Emerson Jenkins had an amazing first seaon with the Lyons, finishing in 8th place in the 50 free (21.34p), 14th in the 100 breast (1:02.25p) and 9th in the 100 free (47.29) at NEWMACs. He was also a part of Wheatons All-American Relay team in the 200 Medley with seniors Ben Sabol, Sam Dean-Lee and Zach Fichman-Klein (pictured below).
Most Valuable Swimmer - FemaleSenior Nicole Zais had a stellar season highlighted by her 6th place finish in the 200 breaststroke at NCAA's in school record fashion (2:18.60). She is the first ever Wheaton female swimmer in history to achieve this success. Congratulations Nicole.

Most Improved - MaleGriffin Hanley had a great sophomore season with the Lyons. He dropped 1.06 seconds in the 50 free, 2.78 seconds in the 100 breaststroke, and 4.49 seconds in the 200 breaststroke from last years NEWMAC Championship meet. And this doesn't include relay splits!! Congrats Griffin!!

Congratulations Sophomore NEWMAC All-American Elle Van Cott saw vast improvements this year. After giving up a third individual event to swim 5 relays at NEWMACs, Elle was given the chance to prove herself in the backstrokes. She did an amazing job, earning school records in the 50 and 100 backstroke in 28.04 and 1:00.31 respectively. Congratulations Elle!!

Nicole Zais TEARS it up at NCAA's

Last week coach JP Gowdy and Wheaton senior Nicole Zais travelled to The University of Tennessee for the 2011 Division III NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships. On the third day of competition, Nicole broke her own school record in the 100 breaststroke finishing 15th in 1:04.23. On the final day of competition, Nicole placed 6th in the 200 breaststroke in a blistering fast 2:18.60. This makes Nicole the highest individual female finisher at an NCAA Championship in Wheaton history. To read the full story, click here.

NICOLE ZAIS qualifies for NCAA's

While the men were duking it out the MIT's pool, senior Nicole Zais traveled to NYU for a last chance meet to qualify for Nationals. With one other swimmer by her side, Nicole broke her own school record, qualifying for NCAA with an A cut time in the 200 breaststroke 2:19.35. Read the complete article here.

The men had a great meet this past weekend at MIT, defeating NEWMAC foe WPI, finishing in fourth place behind MIT, Coast Guard and Springfield.

Day 1
The first day of competition found the men Zach FIchman-Klein, Sam Neill, Ben Sabol, Emmerson Jenkins in 5th in the 200 freestyle relay 1:25.55(prelim)

Emmerson Jenkins finished 8th in the 50 free 21.34(prelim)

The 400 Medley Relay team of Ben Sabol, Sam Dean-Lee, Zach Fichman-Klein and Emmerson Jenkins finished 4th 3:32.93

Charlie Maier finished 4th on the one meter dive 426.60

Day 2
The 200 Medley Relay team of Sabol, Dean-Lee, Fichman-Klein, Jenkins had an All Conference swim with a 2nd place finish 1:35.43

Spencer Deans finished 11th and Eddie Gillie 14th in the 400 IM

Zach Fichman-Klein finished 8th in the 100 fly

Sam Dean-Lee finished 8th, Zach finished 12th and Emmerson finished 14th in the 100 brea

Ben Sabol finished 8th in the 100 back and Devon Best finished 14th

Day 3
The final night of competition saw some great swims from Christian Woods 17:10.17 (12th) and Spencer Deans 17:21.85 (14th) in the 1650 freestyle

Devon Best and Ben Sabol finished 11th and 13th respectively in the 200 backstroke

Emmerson Jenkins finished 9th in the 100 freestyle 47:29

In the 200 breaststroke Trevor Deans was 12th, Kyle Wilson was 15th 2:19.76 and Sam Dean-Lee was 16th

Corey Best finished 8th in the 200 fly

Charlie Maier finished 5th on the three meter dive

The final event of the competition saw the 400 freestyle relay team of Nick Oliveri, Sam Neill, Sam Dean-Lee and Emmerson Jenkins finished 5th 3:12.07

The women fought a tough field this year at the New England Men's and Women's Conference Swimming Championships. They finished third behind MIT, Springfield and US Coast Guard. Some of the highlights include -

Day 1
The first event of the competition was the 200 Freestyle Relay. The women finished 3rd 1:37.14 (Steph Perkins, Dania Piscetta, Elle Van Cott, Nicole Zais)

There were 3 scores in the 50 freestyle (Dania Piscetta 2nd 24.07, Nicole Zais 11th 25.04, Steph Perkins 13th 25.11)

The womens 400 Medley Relay team finished 2nd 3:59.52 (Elle Van Cott, Nicole Zais, Taryn Brosnan, Dania Piscetta)

Day 2
The women started the evening with a 3rd place finish in 200 Medley Relay 1:49.18 (Elle Van Cott, Nicole Zais, Sara Hollar, Steph Perkins)

The 400 IM found Caroline Isaacs breaking her own school record by 4 seconds to finish 5th 4:43.31 and Alisha Wilson dropping 3 seconds from her preliminary swim to finish 13th 4:52.54

Sara Hollar broke a minute in the 100 fly to finish 10th 59.86

Nicole Zais grabbed 2nd in the 100 breaststroke 1:06.82, Steph Perkins was 9th, Kirstie Parkinson 10th 1:09.94 and Nina Lanctot 15th 1:10.15 (prelims)

Elle Van Cott snagged the school record in the 100 backstroke on Day 1 of competition in the Medley Relay 1:00.31 and Dana Auger was right by her with a blistering 1:01.70 on the B Relay team. In the individual event they finished 5th and 12th

Day 3
The final day of competition was highlighted with three amazing swims. Elle Van Cott finished 12th in the 200 backstroke 2:13.65, Nicole Zais chased down her title in final leg of the 200 breaststroke, out touching MIT for the win 2:22.96. Sara Hollar then went on to finish 7th in the 200 fly with a smoking-fast-2:12.71

Senior Nicole Zais was awarded female NEWMAC swimmer of the week last week for her outstanding showing at the Wheaton Invitational. Nicole won both breastrokes
(1:07.29, 2:30.02)and was part of the winning 400 Medley Relay team along with Elle Van Cott, Sara Hollar and Dania Piscetta. To read more about Nicole, click here.

Freshman Charlie Maier was awarded male NEWMAC diver of the week last week for his showing at the Wheaton Invite. It was the first time diving 11 dives and Charlie finished second on both boards, snagging the school record on 3 meter, 395.45. To read more about Charlie, click here.

3 School Records as Lyons lose to Tufts

Congratulations to Nicole Zais and Dania Piscetta for breaking Wheaton's school record in the 100IM - 1:01.49 and 1:01.96, respectively. The previous record was held by Nicole Zais, 1:02.05, set earlier this season.

Freshman diver Charlie Maier also bested his school record on the one meter dive with a score of 262.73. Congrats guys.

This past weekend, the Wheaton Men's and Women's Swimming and Diving Team defeated NEWMAC foe Babson. The women won all sixteen events and the men took nine. Top wins came from Caroline Isaacs (1000 free), Dana Auger (100 back), Sara Hollar (200 fly), Emma Chaiken (1 and 3 meter dive) and Alisha WIlson in the 400IM. Wheaton defeats WPI

The Wheaton men had a great showing this past Wednesday when they defeated NEWMAC foe WPI 137-102. Top swims were had in the 200 freestyle (Sam Dean-Lee, Nick Oliveri and Eddie Gillie) and the 100 breaststroke (Zach Fichman-Klein, Sam Dean-Lee and Trevor Deans) as Wheaton went 1-2-3 in both events. The men also walked away victorious in the 100 backstroke (Ben Sabol), 1 and 3 meter diving (Charlie Maier) and the 400 medley relay (Sabol, Emmerson Jenkins, Fichman-Klein, Dean-Lee).

Freshman Charlie Maier named NEWMAC diver of the week

This past weekend, the Lyons travelled to Mt. Holyoke College for a women's double dual meet vs Clark University and Mt. Holyoke College. The men took on Clark University. On Saturday both teams swam against Trinity College and Connecticut College.

Freshman Charlie Maier helped the men to their first win of the season by taking both the one meter and three meter boards vs Clark (175-118). His score of 251.48 on one meter was good enough for the school record. He then grabbed the three meter school record on Saturday vs Trinity and Connecticut College with a score of 234.45. The men lost to Trinity (97-200) and Connecticut College (92-201). Click here for more info.

The women walked away from the weekend with three wins and one loss to Connecticut College (98-190). They won on Friday vs Mt. Holyoke (162-130) and Clark (153-142) and to Trinity (164-124) on Saturday. Senior diver Emma CHaiken had a great meet, notching two personal best scores on the one meter and three meter boards (211.43 and 210.60 respectively). Click here for complete results.

This week, the Wheaton College swimming and diving team have been training hard in Isla Verde, Puerto Rico. Complete with doubles, dryland, the ocean just footsteps from the hotel, and a trip to El Yunque National Forest, spirits have been high and training has been top notch.

Stay tuned for much more. Tonight, a swim meet vs WPI, LaSalle and Rowan University, tomorrow the team heads to Fajardo for a bioluminescence tour and on Wednesday we have our annual skit night. Its going to be c-r-a-z-y.

Wheaton finishes 4th at MIT Invite

The men and women arrived at MIT this weekend ready to swim fast and prove to Tufts, MIT, Colby, Bowdoin, Harvard and NYU that they were a force to be reckoned with. The first event of the weekend, the 200 freestyle relay saw Adrianne Madden, Nicole Zais, Steph Perkins and Dania Piscetta swim a winning time of 1:35.61, 4 tenths off a school record, good for an NCAA "B" provisional cut time. The four of them also dominated the final event of the weekend, the 400 freestyle relay with an NCAA "B" provisional cut time and school record of 1:33.38. Other wins included Dania Piscetta in the 50 and 100 freestyle (23.74, 52.38), both NCAA "B" cut times and school records and Nicole Zais in the 100 and 200 breaststrokes (1:05.98, 2:23.14), also NCAA "B" cut times. Adrianne Madden also achieved an NCAA "B" provisional cut time of 23.99 and a second place finish in the 50 freestyle.

The men had a fantastic meet as well. The 200 freestyle relay team of Zach Fichman-Klein, Sam Neill, Ben Sabol and Emmerson Jenkins snagged a 7th place finish with a season best, 1:28.47. Freshman Diver Charlie Maier finished 2nd on the 3 meter dive event with a season best, 221.10. Freshman Sam Jackson had a great 100 fly finishing 14th in 55.91 and senior Ben Sabol finished 6th in the 100 backstroke with a season best 54.98. Click here for complete results.

Wheaton tops Keene State but falls to Springfield

This past weekend the Wheaton College Lyons found themselves in their 2nd double dual meet of the season, this time against NEWMAC powerhouse Springfield College and top ranked Keene State. The women beat Keene State, but fell short to reigning NEWMAC champion Springfield. The men fought hard, but came out short against both teams. Click here for full results.

The first event of the meet, the 400 Medley Relay saw Adrianne Madden, Nicole Zais, Dania Piscetta and Steph Perkins dominate the field winning in a time of 4:05.94. According to collegeswimming.com, it is the 12 fastest swim in the country to date.

Batterman Relays

This weekend found MIT, Tufts University, Roger Williams University and Wheaton College compete in the annual Batterman Relays. After a very difficult week of training, Wheaon College arrived at the Balfour Natatorium excited to race. The first event of the meet, the 200 medley relay, saw the ladies (Auger, Zais, Piscetta, Madden) finish 2nd behind MIT with a sixth fastest swim in Wheaton history (1:51.45). Madden, Zais, Perkins and Piscetta also teamed up and swam a whopping fast 200 freestyle relay defeating MIT with a third fastest swim in Wheaton history (1:38.49). The men also had great showings in the 200 medley and free relays. In the 200 medley relay Sabol, Jenkins, Fichman-Klein and Neill finished fourth with a 1:42.10. The same four guys re-teamed in the 200 freestyle relay to finish third in 1:29.07.

Here are a list of other great things that happened this week:

Congratulations to Nicole Zais for breaking her own school record in the 100 individual medley 1:02.05.
Zach Fichman-Klein has made his way into the top tens with a 3rd place swim in the 100 IM, 57.55.
Adrianne Madden's additions to the top tens in the 50 free (4th - 24.36), 100 free (7th - 55.90), 50 fly (2nd - 27.07) and 50 backstroke (4th - 29.04).
Nina Lanctot's addition to the top tens in the 50 breaststroke (10th -33.59).
Emmerson Jenkins addition to the top tens in the 50 free (8th - 22.54) and the 50 backstroke (10th - 26.60).
400 freestyle relay team (Madden, Perkins, Zais, Piscetta) top ten (8th - 3:43.23).
200 freestyle relay team (Fichman-Klein, Neill, Sabol, Jenkins) top ten (8th - 1:29.03).
Charlie Maier's school record in the one meter dive (240.08) and his addition to the top tens in the three meter dive (9th - 185.40).

It's been an amazing start to the season.

Wheaton vs. Roger Williams University

Wheatons first meet of the season verse Roger Williams University started with a bang as the women took first and second place in the 400 Medley Relay (4:15.40 - 4:16.25) and nothing about the score changed during the rest of the meet. Wheaton won 12 of 16 events. Sophomore Caroline Isaacs won the 1000 freestyle with a time of 11:21.92 and senior Alisha Wilson finished fourth (12:06.20). Senior's Steph Perkins and Nicole Zais went 1-2 in the 200 freestyle (2:03.87 - 2:04.05) as did sophomore's Dana Auger and Elle Van Cott in the 50 backstroke (29.79 - 30.56). In the 50 breaststroke, freshman Nina Lanctot took second and sophomore Kirstie Parkinson, 3rd (33.59 - 34.06). Senior Sara Hollar grabbed third in the 200 butterfly (2:22.40) and freshman Adrianne Madden took the top spot in the 50 freestyle - 2 seconds faster than the rest of the field (24.36). Senior diver Emma Chaiken and junior Alex Wilson finished 2-3 in the one meter diving event and they never looked back. Wheaton won the next six events; Adrianne Madden in the 100 freestyle (55.90), senior Dania Piscetta in the 200 backstroke (2:18.86), Nicole Zais in the 200 breaststroke (2:29.95), sophomore Vanessa Fuchs in the 500 freestyle (5:45.10), Dania Piscetta in the 50 butterfly (26.84), Emma Chaiken in the three meter diving event (188.32) and Caroline Isaacs in the 200 IM (2:22.88). The men fougt hard, but fell to Roger Williams 170-130. Senior Corey Best won two individual events, the 200 butterfly and the 200 breaststroke (2:09.84 - 2:26.54), as did fellow senior Zach Fichman-Klein in the 50 breaststroke and the 50 butterfly (29.10 - 24.49). Freshman Charlie Maier took the only other individual win with a school record in the one meter dive (240.08). The 200 freestyle relay team of Zach Fichman-Klein, sophomore Sam Neill, senior Ben Sabol and freshman Emmerson Jenkins were victorious with an 8th fastest swim in Wheaton history with a win in 1:29.03. Hi Swimmers!!!

I hope everyone has had a good first semester so far and I wanted to
wish you all good luck at your first meet!

I’ve been having an amazing time in Copenhagen. It’s a very unique
city with a combination of old buildings, modern architecture, and
lots of canals and waterways! All the roads have bike lanes and most
people bike to school and work including me! Also, the Danish pastries
are REALLY GOOD. I may even like them better than cookies…that’s how
good they are.

I’ve had a chance to do some traveling too. A few weeks ago I went to
Stockholm to visit some of my Swedish relatives, this past weekend I
went to Berlin. I’ve been to Norway a few times to Bergen to see the
fjords which were absolutely beautiful, and also took a cruise to the
capital, Oslo.

I’m doing a special academic program in Medical Biotechnology and Drug
Development, and with my class we went to Edinburgh, Scotland for a
week. Although we spent a lot of time at hospitals and pharmaceutical
companies, we still had plenty of time for sightseeing. All the
buildings in this city looked like castles and later in the week we
went hiking in the highlands!

I’ve just finished a rough week with 3 midterms and 2 papers due, but
starting now we have 2 weeks off for fall break. Tonight I'm leaving
for Vienna then later in the week I'm going to Croatia, and Greenland!
Danish swim practices have been interesting for me. I’m swimming with
a club out of the University of Copenhagen which practices in long
course meters! Their practices are only an hour and a half long, but
there’s no rest between sets and no sprint lane…I’m sure you guys can
imagine how much I love that!

Anyways, good luck tomorrow at your meet and swim fast!!! I miss you
all and look forward to seeing everyone on December 29th!

This past weekend the Wheaton College swim team celebrated alumni weekend with the annual Blue and White swim meet starring current swimmers and divers vs a handful of former Wheaton College swimmers. Sarah Houlihan (10), Iris Meehan (10), Chelsea Stephenson (10), John Ahern (10), Kelly Grant (09), Abby Pratt (08), Meg Miller (08), Tori Hay (08), Matt Jordan (08), Zach Hicks (07), Barrett Roberts (07), Johnny Kuckens (06), Courtney Catalano (06), Maura Huntington (06), Jenna Gustafson (04), and Katie (Levine) Wadland (04) were in attendance. Congrats to Katie Wadland who swam in the meet and is five months pregnant. The first official practice of the 2010/11 season...

Wheaton swimmers hopped into the pool yesterday at the Balfour Natatorium for the first practice of the season. Things look great!! Everyone has a great attitude and is looking forward to swimming fast and proving to NEWMAC Conference competitors that Wheaton Swimming and Diving are a force to be reckoned with.
On Friday, October 1st, Wheaton swimming will continue tradition with the annual lake swim and BBQ. Stay tuned for pictures.

The Alumni meet will take place on October 16th, with many former Wheaton swimmers rumored to be in attendance.

And finally, the first meet of the season will take place at home on October 30 vs Roger Williams University. It's going to be an exciting season. Who's ready?

The Wheaton Swimming and Diving season came to an end recently with the women matching their top finish, 3rd at the NEWMAC Conference Championships. The men finished 4th, matching their best finish since 2007.

The women fought hard during their weekend at Wellesley College with Iris Meehan, Nicole Zais, Taryn Brosnan and Dania Piscetta taking first with an NCAA 'B' cut time in the 200 Medley Relay, 1:48.68. Other big swims included Dania Piscetta's 2nd place finishes in the 200 IM and the 100 butterfly, Nicole Zais taking first in both the 100 and 200 breaststroke, and Taryn Brosnan taking 2nd in the 200 butterfly. Congratulation ladies!

The men had a rough first night, finishing in last place, but the final two days of competition gave them a chance to redeem themselves. Top swims included Corey Best's 6th place finish in the 400 IM, Sam Dean-Lee's 7th place finish in the 100 breaststroke and Ben Sabol's 8th place finish in the 100 backstroke. Lone diver Jon Gold also finished top 8 in both 1M and 3M diving platforms. Congrats men!

Tufts, MIT and Clark University came to the Balfour Natatorium in Norton, MA for a duel in the pool against the Wheaton Lyons. This past weekend the Wheaton Lyons traveled to Tufts University for a double dual meet against Tufts University and Bates University. The women were victorious against Bates 151-147, but fell short against Tufts, 181-119. Click here for full results.

Wheaton vs Babson

This past weekend the men and women swam in their final home meet of the season, finishing the year with a well deserved victory for both teams. To see full results, click here.

The men's 1000 free was the beginning of a great day of racing with Christian Woods out-touching Eddie Gillie for the win (10:33.42, 10:33.72). The men also won the 200 free (Sam Dean-Lee 1:52.37), 100 breast (Zach Fichman-Klein 1:05.41), 200 fly (Charlie Western 2:08.63), 100 free (Sam Dean-Lee 50.94), 200 breast (Corey Best 2:24.35) and the 500 free (Eddie Gillie 5:07.02) to defeat Babson 154-137. The only event the women lost was the 100 freestyle.

Great job everybody!

Wheaton vs Trinity vs Connecticut College

This past weekend Wheaton travelled to New London, CT for a double dual meet against Trinity and Connecticut College. To see complete results, click here.

Top swims included Julia Kusiak-Carey in the 200 free (2:07.58), Kirstie Parkinson, Alisha Wilson and Trevor Deans in the 100 breast (1:13.27, 1:14.54, 1:05.03), Charlie Western in the 200 fly (2:08.51), Steph Perkins in the 100 free (55.72), Spencer Deans in the 200 back (2:10.45), Taryn Brosnan, Corey Best and Trevor Deans in the 200 breast (2:37.46, 2:24.29, 2:24.51) and Julia Wright's 2nd NCAA qualifying time in as many meets on 1M (262.14).

The most exciting swim of the evening was the final event of the meet, the mens 400 Free Relay with a showdown between Wheaton A and Trinity A. The quartet of Sam Dean-Lee, Sam Neill, Devon Best and Ben Sabol finished on top with a season best, 3:23.13.

Wheaton vs MIT

Wheaton swimmers met at the Zesiger Sport and Fitness Center on Friday for a much anticipated dual meet against nationally ranked MIT. Although most of Wheaton was feeling fatigued due to 8 rigorous training days in Florida, both the men and women showed up ready to fight. Unfortunately, MIT walked away the victor. Top swims were had by first place finishers, Sarah Houlihan (1000 free 11:18.67), Dania Piscetta (200 free 2:00.39, 100 fly 1:01.18), Julia Wright (1M and 3M), Trevor Deans (200 breast 2:25.25) and Jon Gold (1M and 3M). Julia Wright qualified for NCAA's on 1M. Congratulations Julia!!!

Other great swims included Chelsea Stephenson and Julia Kusiak-Carey (1000 free), Spencer Deans (200 free), Katie Bordeau and Ben Sabol (100 back), Steph Conelias (200 fly, 200IM), and Charlie Western (200 fly). Congrats to a great effort.

MIT Invite

This past weekend the Lyons travelled to Cambridge, MA for an invitational hosted by MIT; with Tufts, Brandeis, Colby, NYU and Bowdoin joining Wheaton at MIT's famed Zesiger Aquatics Center. The women got things rolling with a third place finish of 1:40.66 in the 200 freestyle relay. Other top female swims included; Dania Piscetta in the 50 free (lead-off relay split, 24.38), 100 free (53.85) and the 100 fly (58.39) - the 50 free and 100 fly were NCAA 'B' qualifying times. Caroline Isaacs had a great meet with top swims in the 200, 500 and 1650 freestyle (2:03.03, 5:23.66, 18:49.44). Sarah Miller swam best times in the 200 free, 500 free and the 200 breast (2:02.11, 5:27.17, 2:33.91). Freshman Dana Auger swam best times in the 100 and 200 backstroke as well as the 50 free (1:05.22, 2:23.86, 26.68). Nicole Zais had top swims in the 100 and 200 breast (1:09.27, 2:29.30). Wheaton Swimming & Diving Teams to Take Part in Cancer Fundraiser

The Wheaton College men's and women's swimming & diving teams will participate in the fourth annual Hour of Power Relay on Monday November 23 at 5:00 p.m. Participating teams complete a "Leave it in the Pool" practice, which consists of continuous relays of any stroke for one full hour. Wheaton is among eight participating New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) schools, joining another 22 from the region and nearly 130 college, high school and club teams from around the nation. Wheaton swimmers had a busy past weekend that started Thursday evening at the Balfour Natatorium in Norton, MA. Fired up and ready to swim fast, both the men and women were confidant to race and defeat Colorado College.

The women came away victorious with a 174-113 victory over the visiting team. The men were defeated 146-147.

Some of the highlights from the meet include Eddie Gillie, Spencer Deans and Christian Woods 2, 3, 4 finishes in the 1000 free (10:40.19, 10:51.65, 11:00.45) and Kathleen Dwyer and Alisha Wilsons 1-2 in the same event (11:53.32, 11:55.76). Corey Best and Charlie Western went 1-2 in the 100 fly (56.72, 56.80). Zach Fichman-Klein won the 50 free (23.13), Sarah Miller took the top spot in the 100 breast (1:12.03), and Dania Piscetta continues to dominate with her win in the 100 backstroke (1:04.46). Lone male diver Jon Gold finished second, 1M (204.15). It was a tough loss for the men, suffering a disqualification on the final relay. To see full mens results, click here. Saturday morning Wheaton swimmers departed from Wheaton's campus and travelled to Springfield, MA for a double dual meet against Springfield College and Keene State. Both teams were defeated.

Highlights include Dania Piscetta's double victories in the 100 freestyle (54.34) and the 100 butterfly (59.50) and Nicole Zais's triumphs in the 100 and 200 breaststroke's (1:10.97, 2:33.69). Zach Fichman-Klein nabbed a second place finish in the 100 butterfly (55.38). Eddie Gillie finished third in the 200 butterfly (2:09.41) as did Devon Best in the 200 backstroke (2:07.03). Senior captain Iris Meehan also delivered some nice swims in both the 100 and 200 backstoke's (1:03.66, 2:19.86). The men had a fast showing in the 200 freestyle relay with Zach Fichman-Klein, Sam Neill, Sam Dean-Lee and Ben Sabol producing their fastest time of the season thus far, finishing second with a 1:32.72. Wheaton vs Coast Guard and New York University

This past weekend the women met at the Balfour Natatorium for a dual meet against the Coast Guard Academy, while the men travelled to New London, CT for a double dual meet against the Coast Guard Academy and New York University.

The women came out victorious, 140-120 with standout swims from Caroline Isaacs in the 1000 free (11:20.79), Steph Conelias in the 200 butterfly (2:21.05), Katie Bordeau in the 200 backstroke (2:22.84) and the 1-2-3 finish by the Wheaton divers on 3 M, Julia Wright, Alex Wilson and Emma Chaiken, respectively. Junior Dania Piscetta continued to dominate with three wins in the 200 free (1:58.52), the 100 free (54.54) and the 100 butterfly (59.68). Check out the complete results here.

The men were not as victorious as the women, losing both meets to Coast Guard and NYU, 77-196 and 95-207, respectively. Wheaton took to the Balfour Natatorium this past week for a double-duel meet against Brandeis and Worcester Poly Tech (WPI).

The women got off to a quick start winning the 200 medley relay in a time of 1:55.65 and they continued to dominate with wins in 13 of 16 events. Standout swims included Sarah Houlihan's 1000 and 500 free (11:19.68, 5:31.95), Dania Piscetta, Caroline Isaac and Sarah Millers 1, 2, 3 finishes in the 200 free (2:02.25, 2:03.96, 2:04.32), Dana Auger's win in the 50 free (26.94) and Dania Piscetta's win in the 200 IM (2:13.72). Julia Wright continued to rule the diving boards with wins on both the 1 meter and 3 meter boards. Final scores - Wheaton vs Brandeis 179-107 and Wheaton vs WPI 207-86. The men were not as fortunate, losing both meets, Wheaton vs Brandeis 109-173 and Wheaton vs WPI 118-169. The only events the men walked away with wins were the 1 and 3 meter diving events - Congrats Jon Gold! The 200 medley relay team defeated WPI, but lost to Brandeis and sophomore Devon Best lost the 200 backstroke to WPI, but defeated Brandeis in a very respectable 2:08.08. Wheaton vs Roger Williams University

Wheaton swimmers ventured to Bristol, RI yesterday for their first dual meet of the season against Roger Williams University. The women's team came out victorious 175.5 to 121.5 while the men fell short 104 to 192.

Freshman Caroline Isaacs was the first to win an event, taking the 1000 freestyle in an impressive 11:29.25. She was quickly followed by Sarah Millers win in the 200 freestyle, Kirstie Parkinson impressive win in the 50 breaststroke, Taryn Brosnan in the 200 and 50 butterfly, Dania Piscetta in the 200 backstroke and the 200 IM, Nicole Zais in the 200 breaststroke, Sarah Houlihan in the 500 freestyle and diver Julia Wright captured wins in both the 1 meter and 3 meter diving events. NORTON, MA- Successful men's and women's swimming & diving seasons for Wheaton College head coach Jean-Paul Gowdy goes well beyond the scope of dual-meet records or conference championship finishes, as the seventh-year coach is careful not to get too far ahead of himself, especially this time of year.

"Every year is different," said Gowdy, who welcomes the largest squads in program history. "Athletes who had a great year still need to come back this year and prove themselves, as those swimmers and divers don't automatically become great again. Occasionally, I find myself taking a step back and thinking if things come together we could be in a good place at the end of the year."

Wheaton's 28-member women's squad returns to the pool following a year in which the Lyons sent a program-high four athletes to the NCAA Championship, where their relay team earned the team's first All-America accolades, while matching their best finish of third at the 10-school New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Championship. Wheaton went 9-6-1 on the year.

Eighteen athletes on the men's side, including 15 returners, look to better their fifth-place finish at the conference meet, as the Lyons were a mere five points shy of fourth place during the seven-team championship. In dual meets, Wheaton went 4-12 against tough regional competition.

Gowdy, who is joined on the coaching staff by fourth-year diving coach Katy Shoemaker, third-year swimming assistant Mary Ellen McLaughlin, second-year assistant Jim Martin and first-year assistant Zach Hicks '07, believes each of his teams have the potential to surpass last year's success but also recognizes there is more to the experience than getting his athletes to improve.

"With our sport being training-based and knowing the challenges," said the 2009 women's swimming conference coach of the year, "one of the things I work hard at is finding a healthy balance with the teams. If we're to be successful, as much as I want to drive, drive, drive, sometimes I need to pull back a little bit and take some time here or there and do some different activities that the athletes appreciate and keep them mentally in a good place."

Gowdy's work appears to be paying off, as the women welcome back all 19 possible returners from a year ago while the men bring back all but two. Depth won't come into play much for dual meets, but because of the way the conference meet is set up, where there are no limits on squad size or number of scorers, taking a large amount of athletes to the league championships will provide more scoring chances.

"Having a number of athletes at the top of a conference is important, which we've been fortunate to have over the years," said Gowdy, "but the way you win a conference meet is not by just having four or five really fast swimmers, but by having an additional group of swimmers and divers that can score critical points. If you're able to accomplish that, then you should be in good shape. Certainly from that standpoint, we're better off than we've ever been."

Last year, the women came within 19.5 points of second place at the NEWMAC Championship, totaling 640.5 points. The Lyons also turned in their first national placement, finishing in a tie for 48th at the NCAA Championship.

Playing a huge role in Wheaton's national showing were juniors Samantha Farrell (Reading, MA/Reading Memorial), Stephany Perkins (Monmouth, ME/Monmouth Academy), Dania Piscetta (Belmont, NH/Belmont) and Nicole Zais (Sudbury, MA/Lincoln-Sudbury Regional), who earned NCAA All-America honorable mention accolades after taking 14th in the country in the 200-yard freestyle relay. Zais posted a program-record five all-conference marks as a sophomore, Piscetta turned in four, Perkins recorded two, and Farrell had one.

Senior co-captain Iris Meehan (Bar Harbor, ME/Mount Desert Island) produced one all-league placement, as did sophomore Taryn Brosnan (Westford, MA/Academy of Notre Dame). Senior Sarah Houlihan (West Springfield, MA/West Springfield) joins Meehan as a co-captain, as the aforementioned seven athletes have their names attached to 18 school records, including 13 individual marks, as the Lyons broke 21 of 25 program standards last year.

In addition to Houlihan and Meehan, the Class of 2010 consists of Stephanie Conelias ( Cheshire , CT/ Cheshire ), Aurelie Marcotte ( Hampden , MA /Minnechaug Regional), diver Maggie Samen ( Lexington , MA / Lexington ) and Chelsea Stephenson ( Cape Elizabeth , ME / Cape Elizabeth ).

Wheaton's eight-member junior class is rounded out by diver Emma Chaiken (Bangor, ME/Bangor), Kathleen Dwyer (Barrington, RI/Barrington), Sara Hollar (La Crescenta, CA/Flintridge Prep) and Alisha Wilson (Cumberland, ME/Greely).

Divers Alexandra Wilson ( Suffield , CT /Suffield) and Julia Wright ( Pomfret , VT / Northfield Mount Hermon School ) join Brosnan, Catherine Army ( Pomfret , CT /Pomfret) and Sarah Miller ( Madison , NJ /Madison) in the sophomore class.

The Blue and White's first-year class is comprised of Dana Auger (Milford, MA/Milford), Katie Bordeau (Sanford, ME/Sanford), Kristin Duquette (East Hartford, CT/East Catholic), Vanessa Fuchs (Paris, France/International School of Paris), Caroline Isaacs (San Jose, CA/Archbishop Mitty), Julia Kusiak Carey (Shawmut, ME/Lawrence), Kirstie Parkinson (Singapore, Singapore/Singapore American School), Tarryn Rourk (Trenton, ME/Mount Desert Island) and Elle Van Cott (Delmar, NY/Bethlehem Central).

John Ahern (Boxboro, MA/Acton-Boxboro Regional) is the lone senior on the men's squad, while tri-captains Corey Best ( Brentwood , TN /Ravenwood), Sam Dean-Lee ( Rocky Hill , CT /Xavier) and Ben Sabol ( Saint Petersburg , FL /Shorecrest Prep) comprise half of the six-member junior class, with Best and Dean-Lee serving as captains for the second year. Dean-Lee is the Wheaton record holder in three freestyle events in addition to swimming a leg on the school's top 800-yard freestyle relay team, while Best owns marks in the 200-yard butterfly and 200- and 400-yard individual medleys.

Rounding out the junior class are Zach Fichman-Klein ( North Attleboro , MA /North Attleboro), Eddie Gillie ( Haverhill , MA / Saint John's Prep) and diver Jonathan Gold ( West Harrison , NY/Fordham Prep). Fichman-Klein owns the school's top time in the 100 butterfly, while Gillie joined Dean-Lee on the record 800 free relay team.

Wheaton's largest class is drawn from its group of sophomores, comprised of returners Devon Best (Brentwood, TN/Ravenwood), Dylan Caldwell (Chapel Hill, NC/Emerson Waldorf School), twins Spencer Deans (Redding, CT/Joel Barlow) and Trevor Deans (Redding, CT/Joel Barlow), Alex Hosey (Danville, PA/Wyoming Seminary), Andrew Oliveri (Glastonbury, CT/Glastonbury), Charles Western (Syracuse, NY/Nottingham) and Christian Woods (Claremont, CA/Webb School of California). Devon Best, Corey's younger brother, holds the program mark in the 200-yard backstroke and swam a leg on the record-breaking 800 free relay.

Sophomore Guive Rosen ( Cambridge , MA / Cambridge Rindge & Latin School ) preps for his initial college season, and the Lyons also welcome freshmen Griffin Hanley ( Andover , MA /North Andover) and Sam Neill ( Ludlow , MA /Belchertown).

Both squads begin the season today at Roger Williams University before hosting Brandeis University and Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) on Saturday. In addition to a heavy dual slate, the Lyons will compete at the Charlie Batterman Relays on November 7, the two-day Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Invitational in early December and the Wheaton Invitational in February.

The women travel to Wellesley College for the three-day NEWMAC Championship, beginning on February 19, before Wheaton hosts the men's meet for the second straight season and the fourth time in the last five years the following weekend. The four-day NCAA Championship returns to the University of Minnesota from March 17-20.

"A successful season will be the men and women getting a ton of personal bests," said Gowdy. "If we're getting personal bests we're going to be scoring a lot of points at the conference meets, and if we're scoring a lot of points we're going to give ourselves a great shot to move up on the men's side and contend for a title on the women's side. Last year, our athletes recorded personal bests in more than 90 percent of the events during the NEWMAC meets. If we're up near there again with either team we're going to be in great shape."

Wheaton Pentathlon

Wheaton swimmers took to the water on Saturday to compete in the annual pentathlon. Each swimmer swam 100 yards of the 4 swimming disciplines; fly, free, back, breast (in that order), and the 200 IM. This year junior Zach Fichman-Klein beat out all the men by more than ten seconds, finishing in a time of 6:11.92. Wheaton Swimmers compete in annual Biathalon

Every year, before all Wheaton students take a break from their studies to celebrate the long Columbus Day Weekend, the Wheaton swimmers compete against each other in a grueling swim in the pool plus a road race around campus - The Biathalon. The race consists of an 800 yard swim, a 2.2 mile run and 12 underwater swims. Junior captain Corey Best and senior captain Iris Meehan captured the title for the second year in a row. Congrats guys. This past weekend, Wheaton swam their annual White vs. Blue vs. Alumni meet at the Balfour Natatorium. Wheaton Alumni swimmers included NCAA qualifier and Wheaton school record holder Barrett Roberts as well as '07 graduate and current assistant coach, Zach Hicks. Some of the standout swims included Sarah Houlihan, Caroline Isaacs and Devon Best in the 200 free, Nicole Zais and Barrett Roberts (22.49) in the 50 free, Sam Dean-Lee in the 100 free, Dania Piscetta and Corey Best in the 100 fly and Nicole Zais and Sarah Miller in the 100 breast. Sophomore diver Julia Wright also dominated the boards. At the end of the day, it was the white team that came out victorious!

Wheaton Women finish 48th at NCAA's

The sophomore team of Sam Farrell, Steph Perkins, Dania Piscetta and Nicole Zais swam 10 events this past week at the NCAA® Division III Swimming & Diving Championships in Minnesota. Dania swam three individual events with a top finish in the 100 butterfly (30th, 58.16). Nicole also swam three individual events finishing 23rd and 25th respectively in the 100 and 200 breaststroke (1:05.96, 2:24.50). The 200 freestyle NEWMAC winning team then jumped into the water in their best event, the 200 freestyle relay to finish fourteenth with a time of 1:37.17. It was a great end to a fantastic season overall. Great job ladies!

Wheaton Men Take Down Roger Williams

The Wheaton Lyon men were in great spirits Friday night after hearing their efforts in the pool had granted them a win against Roger Williams University. The sophomore's of Eddie Gillie, Sam Dean-Lee, Ben Sabol, Zach Fichman-Klein, Corey Best and Jon Gold stepped up to the blocks with determination in their eyes and it paid off. Eddie captured three wins in the 100 and 200 freestyle and the 200 individual medley. Sam secured a win in the 500 freestyle and successfully swam two second place finishes behind Eddie in the 100 and 200 freestyle. Ben grabbed some important points in his three events, 2nd in the 50 freestyle as Zach snagged a win in the 50 butterfly. Corey was victorious in the 200 butterfly and Jon came out on top in the 3M Diving event securing Wheaton's attempt at winning the meet. The freshman men also stepped up with Cole Larson-Whittaker winning the 1000 freestyle, Devon Best capturing 2nd in the 200 backstroke, Charlie Western grabbing second in the 200 butterfly and Trevor Deans taking second in the 200 breaststroke and third in the 200 individual medley.

The Wheaton men and women are home to take on MIT next Saturday at 1:00pm.
